Spending the weekend in Oregon

Posted by: naomi @ 11:45 pm in blog news

Hi everyone! We’re spending the weekend in Oregon: shopping in Portland, Maryhill Museum of Art, Pearl District and driving up the Oregon coast via Cannon Beach and of course, antiquing our butts off. Have a fun and fantastic weekend!

Letterpress wine labels by Hatch Show Print

Posted by: ryan @ 10:54 pm in letterpress, packaging

A few weeks ago, I stopped by a liquor store to pick up some booze and stumbled across some 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Hatch Show Print Wine! I’ve always wanted to visit the legendary print shop in Nashville Tennessee and so I had to pick up a bottle.

Fabulous Finds: Vintage headbands by LIASON

Posted by: naomi @ 7:39 pm in clothing & accessories, featured shops

I love browsing the shops on Etsy not only for unique prints and knick knacks for my house, but for the amazing designers who put out great one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories. LIASON is no exception. I first came across this store, run by a talented designer named Katherine, during my hunt for a feathered headband to accessorize my outfit for an upcoming 1920’s flapper party.

Vintage Finds: 1950’s desk & chair

The Modernaire Desk - 1950s Invincible Office Furniture Company

A few weeks ago, I took my mother shopping and we came across a place called Hansen House – an antique importer over on Clark Drive which was closing down. Everything in the store was 75% off and it was the last day before closing so we decided to check it out. There were a lot of ‘Asian themed’ furniture but nothing caught my eye until I came across a desk covered with a pile of stuff at the back of the store.

Restoring an old lens: Jupiter-11 135mm F/4

Posted by: ryan @ 12:11 am in cameras & lenses, diy refinishing

During the summer months I photograph dozens of weddings. It’s a demanding job that requires a camera which focuses quickly and lenses that are sharp and vibrant. For any job I’ll use a Canon 5D with an assortment of L series lenses. When I’m not shooting weddings or commercial gigs, I like to experiment with old and unique lenses on my SLR.

A homage to my first SLR camera: The Canon AE-1

Posted by: ryan @ 8:15 pm in cameras & lenses

This is my very first blog post, so I though it would be appropriate to make it about the very first camera I ever owned, the Canon AE-1. Almost 8 years ago, I majored in Photography at The Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design. One day, I found myself sitting in Black and White 101.  Since it was a 100-level course, most students had borrowed manual SLR cameras to see if they were interested in photography before investing in something bigger.

Letterpress with a touch of love: Prints by Hijirik

Posted by: naomi @ 11:12 am in featured shops, letterpress

I love the look of letterpress.

There’s something about the smell of inks and the way the paper feels as you run your fingers over the slightly indented text that makes me sad to think it’s a dying art form that may one day disappear. While browsing Etsy the other day, I came across a lovely letterpress shop run by the sweetest girl, Hijirik, who also owns Hijirik Design Studio.

Vancouver Flea Markets & Antique Fairs

Posted by: naomi @ 3:41 pm in events

For those of you local to Vancouver, one of my favorite places to hunt for antiques and one-of-a-kind items is at the 21st Century Promotions Flea Market & Antique Fair. They have monthly events around the Lower Mainland and I always find tons of unique things for the house, stuff to fuel my pyrex obsession and prints to hang on my walls. It’s also great to be in a room full of knowledgeable people who have a passion for vintage items and other old things.

The last one just passed (July 19) so mark your calendars for August 29 and 30 for the Burnaby Lake Antiques Fair from 10am to 5pm. Entry is $6 at the door.

See you there!

Refinishing an Asbestos SAD Iron – Part 1

Posted by: naomi @ 11:32 pm in diy refinishing, home decor

Long before upright steamers, dry cleaning, variable heat settings and non-stick finishes, there was . . . the Asbestos SAD Iron. Back in April, on a trip to Seattle, I found one for $5 at a run down antique shop in the middle of some farmland while passing through Fairhaven.

When I saw it, I wasn’t sure what it was – plus it was missing the handle. I think after it’s done it would make a pretty cool doorstop or something to throw at bad guys if I ever come across one and have it handy. It was covered in rust and pretty nasty when I brought it home.

The First Post

Posted by: naomi @ 8:57 pm in blog news

Every blog has a beginning and this is ours. We are two people who share a passion for all things old and the inspirations you can draw out of them. As this blog grows, we hope to share and interact with like minded people.

Some words to describe the topics we’ll write about:

  • Letterpress printing – and the trials and tribulations of putting together your own letterpress shop
  • Old, old, very old (did I say old?) cameras and lenses, collecting them, fixing them up and sometimes using them
  • DIY refinishing – ever find that awesome (something) at a garage sale/flea market/thrift store? Me too!!
  • Vintage home decor and interior design – I swear I was an interior designer in another life, or something like that. The folder of home-living eyecandy sitting on my computer’s hard drive is proof.

That’s enough of an intro for now – hope you’ll stop by often and interact with us.
