Refinishing a balloon back chair – Part 2

Posted by: naomi @ 6:54 pm in diy refinishing, vintage finds

You can read Part 1 here.

We finally found some time to work on the chair. FYI I did end up getting a little paint happy and overdid it a bit, so the lesson we can all learn from this is – less is more. There wasn’t really anywhere to work on the chair without making a mess so we just decided to do it on the lawn and propped it up on some makeshift blocks (they were actually engine oil bottles).

Heaven in a House – Madison Park Antiques

Posted by: naomi @ 12:35 am in featured shops, travel

Are you sick of all the Portland posts yet? Well here’s one more.

Madison Park Antiques is a MUST VISIT. This store is a gorgeous, well edited collection of antiques, vintage home decor and various other ephemera. I noticed the small, discreet sign outside while walking around an area of Portland (I forget the name) filled with antique and vintage stores. Out of all of the shops on the block, this one definitely stood out – mainly because it was in a beautiful residential house rather than a store front.

For anyone who is a fan of books, Powell’s Books in Portland’s Pearl District is a must see . It’s so large it occupies one city block. On our recent trip to Portland we made a stop and left with a ton of books.

My First Experience at Voodoo Doughnut

Posted by: ryan @ 1:51 am in food, travel

On my trip to Oregon a few weeks ago, I stopped by a famous Portland destination – Voodoo Doughnut. The interior of the store is filled with vintage ephemera including concert posters, ads, toys and various other knick knacks. With donuts named “The Memphis Mafia”, “Dirty Snowball” and “Bacon Maple Bar” I couldn’t help but wonder what these bizarre donuts were like. Continue reading »

Book Review: The B. B. King Treasures

Posted by: ryan @ 12:12 am in books, people

A few years ago I decided that the guitar was an instrument I wanted to play. Leaning towards learning the blues, I realized I didn’t know much about the history behind the music. I wanted to learn more about the people who played blues guitar and the first person who came to mind is the legendary B.B. King. Continue reading »

A woman, a cat and her jewelry (vintage of course)

Posted by: naomi @ 10:43 pm in clothing & accessories, people

This past weekend, Ryan and I hung out with my friend Sally at her apartment in Gastown. She’s one of the most unique women I’ve ever met and loves all things sparkly, shiny and vintage. Taking photos of her (+ her cat Loki) and some of her stuff just seemed natural for this blog. An avid collector of fun party dresses, you’ll often see Sally walking down the street with one of her many parasols, elbow length gloves and sky high heels.

Vintage Finds: Yashica Electro GSN & MG-1

Posted by: ryan @ 12:29 am in cameras & lenses, vintage finds

Yashica MG-1 & Electro GSN

A couple of weeks ago on my trip to Portland, I found myself hunting through a few Goodwill stores. At the back of one of the stores was a shelf piled high with old plastic 90’s film cameras and in the middle of it all I found two gems – a Yashica Electro GSN and a Yashica MG-1. At a whopping $8.99 each I had to pick them up. Continue reading »

Refinishing a balloon back chair – Part 1

Posted by: naomi @ 9:46 pm in diy refinishing, vintage finds

As you can see, it’s been a productive weekend. I found this balloon back chair for $40 at a hole in the wall vintage/antiques store on the way to Seattle. Those who believe antiques should be preserved and kept ‘as-is’ you’ve been warned. More pictures, less words – keep reading to see me destroy this baby and then put it back together.

Treasure Hunting: The Goodwill Outlet

Posted by: ryan @ 10:18 am in travel, vintage finds

Last weekend, my family and I zipped down to Portland (again) for a quick shopping trip and while we were there, went to visit a Goodwill thrift store. In Vancouver, the equivalent would be The Salvation Army, or Value Village.

Book Review: Tiki Modern

Posted by: ryan @ 10:00 am in books, home decor

Tiki style – love it or hate it. It can be both quirky and tacky at the same time. Myself, I adore Tiki style – if done right. When Taschen published the book Tiki Modern and The Wild World of Witco, I had to make it part of my collection. Continue reading »

Leather handbags made from vintage materials

Posted by: naomi @ 10:59 pm in clothing & accessories, featured shops

I have a weakness for handbags, so when the lovely Miss Beth alerted me to Ora Handbags, I was immediately smitten. These bags are designed by the very talented Randi in my hometown of Vancouver, BC.

Ora Handbags are made from vintage garments and local upholstery scraps that would otherwise crowd the landfills. All Ora handbags are fully lined with internal pockets. All straps are adjustable and each bag is made one by one by designer Randi in Vancouver BC.

1969 Eaton’s Spring & Summer Catalogue

Posted by: naomi @ 12:01 am in books, vintage finds

Here are some photos from the 1969 Eaton’s Spring & Summer Catalogue – sure to elicit a few giggles. Not much to say except I found this in a box at a flea market on Vancouver Island. The following are a few of my favorite pages from the catalogue.

Story of a point and shoot: Olympus Ecru

Posted by: naomi @ 12:44 pm in cameras & lenses

ecrucamera

Happy Sunday everyone. I thought I’d start off the week by posting about one of my favorite cameras, which happens to be a point and shoot. And film. And pretty great overall.

It’s called the Olympus Ecru and is probably one of the most unique looking cameras I’ve ever seen. Whenever I bring it out, everyone always asks what it is, how it works – fascination all around. From the Olympus website:

Olympus Ecru (1991)
“Ecru” is French for “unbleached.” The name of this concept camera was chosen to symbolize its intended role as a tool for living an intellectually enhanced life as natural as unbleached cloth. This concept is symbolized in the white body of the camera, which was sold as a limited edition of 10,000 units in Japan and 10,000 overseas.
