Vintage 1960s Adjust-O-Matic dress form

Posted by: naomi @ 12:16 am in travel, vintage finds

We’re back from Oregon and it was a fantastic weekend of art, culture, coastlines and antiquing. I wasn’t having much luck with the vintage/antique stores until Ryan came across this amazing, in-perfect-condition adjustable dress form.  It was sitting in the corner of an antique mall in Newport, Oregon a few minutes away from the aquarium (which is amazing, btw – everyone should visit). I have the original box and instructional manual, although the stand is missing. Total cost: $35.00.

I’m not sure how old it is, but judging from this ad I found via Google News, it’s probably from the 1960s. According to the ad, it adjusts from a size 8 to a 20 and is so easy even a schoolgirl can use it. It’s made out of high-grade Alpha Cellulose impregnanted (yes the ad uses that word) with DuPont Neoprene for long life and durability. Throw it on the floor, kick it, beat it – see how wonderfully it stands up.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet – first thing I’ll need to figure out is how I’m going to make a stand for it. I’m picturing it in the corner of my room with some great jewelry draped over it or some vintage silk scarves. Here are some more photos of the front and back.

Well, you can’t buy it anymore from a store, no – they’re very about 20 or 30 years ago I think. They are definitely around though so you can try and see if you can pick one up on craigslist, ebay or your local thrift store!

I just found one of these in a thrift store a few weeks ago! I love it… trying to figure out if I can adjust it easily…

Awesome – yeah, I want o make mine smaller but it seems really difficult to take down because of all the pins holding it together. Let me know if you do it and how hard it is.

I have just listed one of these on uk ebay – it’s a Form-o-matic and looks slightly different but does have the stand with it.

I have one my auntie gave me I use since I like making my own clothes and don’t like getting poked with pins when fitting them. It was the right size (my aunties size years ago) but now I’ve lost weight but have no manual so don’t know how to adjust it. Anyone know where I can download one? Would love to finish this outfit for new years.

Hi Tricia! Sorry :( Ours didn’t come with a manual. Try searching on eBay or Google images?

I found one a flea market for (are you ready for this) $5.00. It is still in it’s original box with the sale sticker from Joske’s of Texas. Which was in Downtown San Antonio.
I think I got a get deal, I am excited….

I used to have one of these yers ago and was persuaded to sell it by my then new hubby, I have regretted it ever since. The modern dummys just do not adjust to some dramatic proportions.
I still have the directions for the form. It did take time to assemble but it worked well once done and weighted with a bag of rocks to keep it from falling over. I guess no one is making them any more, more the shame.

I just found one in my husband’s grandmother’s attic in great shape with the stand, no instructions that I have found yet. She just died (she was 96). I don’t sew. I have a friend that just started sewing. My question is should I keep it and just display it or give it to my friend? How much is it worth? My brother-in-law says that Restoration Hardware sells a reproduction for a thousand dollars. It may not be the Adjust-O-Matic. Any suggestions?
