1940’s CCM Rambler: My new summer bike

Posted by: ryan @ 8:22 pm in moving things, vintage finds

A few weeks ago I mentioned a bike in my post about vintage theater seats. Well, here is that bike. After tracing the serial number, I discovered that it is a 1941 CCM Rambler and is similar to the one currently on display in the Canadian Science & Technology Museum in Ottawa. It needs some work, but I’m looking forward to getting it rolling this summer.

The bike is in pretty good shape for being nearly 70+ years old. I was contemplating powder-coating the bike black, but after much thought I’ve decided to stick with the original paint scheme. It has too much character and charm to paint over it.

I love the CCM gear hub.

Another reason why I’ve decided not to paint it is because of the original hand pinstriping and 1945 Vancouver Bicycle registration sticker.

I’ll be blogging my progress with it over the next few months so keep checking back for updates. The first thing this bike is going to get is a new seat and set of tires.

So cool, and I love the photographs…it tells a story, and there is definately alot of care and attention to those details. I like that bike cog.

Ryan, I love your blog – your photos never fail to blow me away, and inspire me to want to get out there more often with my camera.

Your new bike is amazing, and I can’t wait to see what she looks like with a little bit of love and time invested :)

Yes, it would be a shame to paint that bike. Nice find.

Hello, this bike is a great find and very original! However, it is not a Rambler model. The CCM Rambler line was a lower priced line that was still good quality but did not have a chainguard, had the lower-cost one-piece crank, and cheaper seats and tires. The rims on the Rambler models were painted and pinstriped. The good news is that the bike that you fouind is a higher priced CCM model with the Triplex crank and other features. The Rambler headbadge said “CCM Rambler” on it and was not as pointed at the top and bottom as the regular CCM headbadge was.

Hi John! Thanks for the fantastic tips! It’s really hard to find information on vintage CCM bikes. If this isn’t a Rambler, do you know what model it is?

Thanks!

Hello Again, this model of CCM was known simply as a “Motorbike”, while the less expensive model was the “Rambler Motorbike”. CCM started producing double bar bicycles around 1917 and calling them “Motorbikes” since they were made to resemble the early motorcycles in appearance. American manufacturers had done the same thing several years earlier. For CCM, 1962 was the last year for double bar bicycles (the “Balloon Motorbike”), which had 26″ wheels and 2″ cross-section tires. Your “Motorbike” cost $46.75 in 1940, while the “Rambler Motorbike” sold for $38.75. For the extra money, CCM added a “Triplex” 3-piece crank, “Gibson” pedals, a better front hub, longer fenders, chromium-plated english “Dunlop” rims with a red centre stripe (although some bicycles produced in the early years of the war had CCM-made “Westwood” rims that were painted with a silver center band on a blue background). Other parts, such as seats, handlebar grips, and tires were also of better quality on the “Motorbike” models.

John Williamson

Hi John! WOW! Thanks for all that info! It’s really tough finding any information on very old CCM bicycles. Thanks again!

Thats an awesome bike! Near my house, there was an old farm barn and inside there was a bike very similar! It even has a light. I must say, it’s pretty awesome.

Hello.
We have a CCM Rambler at The Manitoba Musum. I am trying to find a serial number on it to date it. I know it is post 1941. Is there a serial number on your bike? Perhaps John Williamson (above) would know where to find it.
Thank you,
SR
