Stumbling upon antique movie theatre seats

Posted by: ryan @ 1:13 am in thrifting, vintage finds

Two nights ago I headed out to South Burnaby to have a look at an old bicycle that someone was selling off Craigslist. Little did I know, I’d also bring back some very old theater seats.

Over the years I’ve been to some pretty sketchy places in search for cool items, but this tops them all. I assumed the address would take me to someone’s house but instead it took me to a deserted industrial complex.  As I stepped into the warehouse I walked past a beautiful 1950’s Dodge car that was itching to be restored.

I was here to check the bike out and my eyes started to scan the place for other cool things he might be getting rid of. In the corner of the warehouse sat a pile of very old movie theater seats.  I’ve always wanted vintage movie theater seats but they can be very difficult to find. These seats came from the Lyric Theater in Vancouver which was opened in the mid 1930’s and was demolished in the late 1960’s. It was replaced by the now historic Orpheum Theater.

I snatched two seats which need some work but I think once they’ve had a good cleaning and some possible upholstery work they’ll look fantastic. I absolutely adore the cast iron leg work on these and I can only imagine what sort of magnificent performances the audiences who sat in these seats saw.

I forgot to mention I also bought that bike. A mid 1930s CCM Rambler Bicycle. It has a very cool 1946 Vancouver registration sticker on the post. I can’t wait to overhaul this and ride it in the spring with Naomi. I’ll post about this sweet find soon!

Great for you! They are hard to find… especially at a good price. I’ve had my eye on a pair at a local salvage yard, but they are overpriced. Bummer.

These are neat please show us what you end up doing with them. I’m sure you already have a place picked out. I always wanted a church pew or bench. A friend of mine had one years ago in her living room it was neat. She should have kept that.

@Debra – That’s awesome.. do you have photos of the church pew in her living room? Did she use it as a couch?

Like Debra’s friend, I have 3 seats just like this – cast iron feet, red velvet seats and beautiful wood armrests. They were the last mini-row of usher seats from the Christian Science church I grew up attending.

The rest – easily 500 perfect seats in long rows – had all been unceremoniously thrown into a dumpster and sat there over the winter. They couldn’t be salvaged, but I managed to grab these from under the wide, columned portico.

From the ages of 3 to 17, I’d walk up and down the aisles of the huge room each Sunday as the pipe organ played while the little old ladies streamed out the front doors. I’d lift all the seats back into the upright position, including the ones I rescued from the dumpster.

So a few years after rescuing the seats, I called the next dopey developer of the building to inquire about the family repurposing it as their home. He asked if I knew where to find any of the original furniture – seats, chandeliers, etc. I simply said, “Nope.” I had been taking care of these seats for almost 30 years… so I’m not going to give them up now.

Hi Brad!

Thanks for the story! It’s sad that all the seats got dumped, but i’m glad you managed to nab a few! On a side note, it would be hard to find a storage space for all 500 seats ;) Great blog you have on your side as well!
