Tune Tuesdays: Singin’ the Blues

Posted by: ryan @ 12:21 am in people, records & music

This week’s Tune Tuesday is dedicated to my good friend Jim Rimmer, pictured above playing his cornet. His all time favorite artist was the famous cornet player, Bix Beiderbecke.

Bix was an American Jazz cornetist, pianist and composer. He was born in 1903 and often played with Louis Armstrong, who both became influential Jazz soloists during the 1920’s.

The song featured today is, “Singin’ the Blues.” According to Wikipedia, “His turns on “Singin’ the Blues” (1927) and “I’m Coming, Virginia” (1927), in particular, demonstrated an unusual purity of tone and a gift for improvisation. They helped to invent the jazz ballad style and hinted at what, in the 1950s, would become cool jazz.”

I don’t have any of Bix’s work as part of my 78rpm collection, but I’ve managed to find a great recording below. Enjoy!

Cool Im enjoying this song as I am writing this comment. I like how your songs kinda flow from week to week, last weeks was a lil more upbeat, this week is similar, but a lil more mellow – Just the right music for us to wind down from the New Years craziness. Was this done on purpose? Im enjoying this song as I am writing this comment. Thanks for sharing your songs with us. :D
